The freighter Courtney Burton got into an awkward position after getting caught in waves and thick ice near the Duluth ship canal on April 8, 1980. The harbor tugs Vermont and Rhode Island went to try to help but were blocked by the ice pack. The Burton eventually freed itself and reached safety on the open lake. The ship, later renamed the American Fortitude, was sent to a scrapyard this month. FORUM NEWS SERVICE
