JH Signs opens second site

Looking to add a second location to its decade old signing business, JH Signs recently opened an office along Highway 10 east in Detroit Lakes.

Situated at 603½ East Highway 10, JH Signs and Design is a full-service sign and design company with main offices in Perham.

"We started in Perham almost 10 years ago," explained owner Justin Helmke. "As we were noticing we were getting quite a few customers from the lakes area, we decided to open an office here, too."

A full-service sign shop, JH Signs and Designs offers a variety of signing services for vehicles, digital printing, awnings, neon, channel letters, lighted sings and banners.

"Our goal is to be a true one-stop shop. We do everything from neon to truck lettering and also provide sign repair," commented Helmke.

A graduate of Minnesota State Community and Technical College Detroit Lakes sign program, Helmke's sign business employs four staffers plus himself.

Bob McDougall manages the JH Sign's Detroit Lakes branch and has the unique distinction of being one of Helmke's former MSCTC instructors.

"It's nice to see graduates go on to open businesses with what they have learned. I am happy to lend a hand," started McDougall, "and JH Signs does a little bit of everything, which is great."

Basic to big, JH Signs services signs as well -- a handy trade for a small town sign company, added McDougall.

"I don't know if we are taking advantage of any niche out there," continued Helmke, "but we have garnered a lot of business from being able to repair as well as produce them."

With a variety of signs to produce, sell and service, Helmke remarked it is the nature of the business that has kept him in the trade for over a decade.

"We work year round regardless of weather and have done all kinds of projects from the outside sign at the Fireside to awnings at Nyhus Family Auto Sales. It really is something different every day," he commented.

With multiple business sites stretching across the lakes area now, Helmke notes he is content with the size of his two-location sign shop.

"I think we went as far as we want to go and are happy with our current size," explained Helmke. "I divide my time between both shops so right now there is a lot of driving."

JH Signs and Designs is located at 603½ East Highway 10 in Detroit Lakes, next to SuLaines Antique Mall. Their Perham store is situated at 744 W. Main Street.
