Fair Hills Resort make adjustments, adds take-out food service to menu of options

Fair Hills Resort, run by the Kaldahl family since 1926, has resisted complacency and adjusted itself to the ever-changing resort environment.

In an industry that has struggled to adapt to its customers' needs and wants, Fair Hills has continuously proven to accommodate its customers for more than 80 years.

Whether it was a social dance every week or a bingo night for the entire family, Fair Hills entertained its guests in a much different way than it does now. Today, Fair Hills is home to Wildflower Golf Course, a four and a half star course that draws people from around the region.

Guests typically stay from Saturday to Saturday during the summer and have their choice of free water-ski, tennis, golf, sailing and baseball lessons. Included in the American Plan rate are also three meals a day, activities for all age groups, use of resort amenities: playground, basketball, beach volleyball, 9-hole golf course, swimming pool and hot tub, billiards, shuffleboard, sailboats, paddleboats, canoes, hydro-bikes and six tennis courts. Boat rentals, kayaks, bicycles and golf carts are available at an additional cost. Fishing guides and an 18-hole professional golf course, Wildflower, are also available to resort guests.

"Our goal at Fair Hills Resort is to make the most enjoyable, fun and relaxing atmosphere possible to our guests," said Beth Kaldahl Schupp, fourth-generation owner of Fair Hills. "We want to have activities so people keep active, but at the same time offer enough services so people can relax."

Activities vary from fishing off a dock and scavenger hunts for the younger kids, softball and kickball games for older kids and a cocktail party and closest-to-the-pin golf tournament for adults. There is some sort of activity every day and every night. On Tuesday night the resort employees put on the Hootenanny, a musical started in the 1960s and is now the longest running musical in the state of Minnesota.

"Regardless of whether you decide to relax on the beach or take part in every activity, Fair Hills Resort has something for everyone," said Schupp.

Fair Hills has also added their Big Pelican cruise ship, a heated swimming pool, wireless Internet, conference space and motorized watercraft, all while maintaining the same family oriented atmosphere it first started with.

"I think the biggest reason we are so successful today is because of the ability and desire to change to our customers' needs," said Beth Kaldahl Schupp, general manager of Fair Hills Resort. "Many resorts either didn't want to change or couldn't. We have been fortunate enough to add the golf course, cabins and other amenities throughout the years."

Fair Hills has accepted the trends that come and go within the tourism industry and instead of trying to resist those trends, it has met them head-on and encouraged the change.

One more change is the addition of opening the kitchen and take-out service to the public.

The kitchen at Fair Hills Resort has served more than 4,000 meals each week for the past 82 years and now those delicious meals are available for the entire lakes area. Fair Hills Resort will offer meals from Friday dinner to Sunday dinner. Breakfast and lunch are available on Saturdays and Sundays.

Menus vary from quiche and yogurt parfaits for breakfast, a Northwoods Wild Rice Chicken salad for lunch or steak and shrimp kabobs for dinner. Breakfast is available for purchase from 7-10 a.m. Lunch is available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Dinner is available from 5-8 p.m.
