Bremer grants help M State, WELRP

The Otto Bremer Foundation awarded 82 grants totaling $3.9 million in September, including a number of projects that will benefit this area.

Here are a few of them:

• The Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes received $30,000 to support the infrastructure of the Business & Entrepreneurial Services program.

• The White Earth Land Recovery Project Native Harvest in Callaway received $50,000 for general operating support of its sustainable development initiatives.

• The Wellstone Action Fund in St. Paul received $50,000 to provide leadership and civic engagement training for the American Indian communities in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota.

• The news and opinion website MinnPost in Minneapolis received $95,000 to support youth chronicling, combined with reporting by professional journalists, to portray life challenges facing rural Minnesota youth.

• The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, Inc. in St. Paul received $270,000 to support the transition of nonprofits and the nonprofit sector to post-recession sustainability.

• Apple Tree Dental of Minneapolis received $60,000 to support the development of a new business model and to provide dental services to low-income families in west-central Minnesota.

• The HOME Line of Minneapolis received $50,000 to provide organizing and advocacy to low income renters in greater Minnesota.

Created in 1944, the Otto Bremer Foundation assists people in achieving full economic, civic, and social participation in and for the betterment of their communities.

The Otto Bremer Foundation owns the majority share of Bremer Bank, and a portion of the bank's profits comes to the Foundation as dividends, enabling the Foundation to invest back in the bank communities.
