Williams named new sports editor in DL

Detroit Lakes Newspapers has a new sports editor at its helm.

Bob Williams was recently named to the position, replacing longtime sports editor Brian Wierima, who moved to Florida with his wife and son.

Williams is no stranger to the Detroit Lakes Newspapers, as he has not only worked as a freelance writer under Wierima for the DL papers, but has also been the sports editor at the Perham Focus since 2010.

Both papers are owned by Forum Communications Com-pany.

“Having a working relationship with Brian for a decade and already working for Forum Communications made for a smooth transition,” said Williams. “I’m able to just sit down and plug in.”

Knowing the town like the back of his hand doesn’t hurt either.

Williams is a Detroit Lakes native and a 1989 DLHS graduate. He went on to study creative writing and classic literature at St. Cloud State University before reporting for the Fergus Falls Daily Journal in 2007.

Although Williams says he enjoyed writing news, sports is where his heart is.

“I’ve always loved sports,” said Williams. “I love interacting with the kids; it’s fun to watch them succeed, and I’m excited to cover sports in my hometown.”
