On Friday, Sept. 28, Holy Rosary Middle School students took a trip to the Renaissance Festival in Shakopee.

At the festival, students enjoyed many activities, such as glass blowing, print making, candle making, face painting, musical instruments, pottery and sculptures. Other educational events and entertainment included Renaissance History, Live Action Jousting, Courtly Dance Lessons, Juggling School and Renaissance games.

After the trip, the students participated in a creative writing contest, sponsored by the Renaissance Festival, and wrote stories or poems with the theme of The Knight Who Wouldn't Fight.

Eighth grader Katriana Mehlhaff won second place for her story and received two tickets to the Children's Theater, two passes to the 2013 Renaissance Festival and $10 Papa Murphy's gift card.

Sixth grader Hunter Hagen won "Overall Most Creative Story" and received two Children's Theater tickets and two passes to the 2013 Renaissance Festival.

Bookmark contest

Holy Rosary eighth graders participated in the "2012 Teen Read Week Bookmark Design Contest" put on by the Lake Agassiz Regional Library.

Students created a bookmark with art inspired by their favorite book and also listed 5-10 similar books that they have enjoyed reading. Two students from Holy Rosary won for their designs and will have their drawings reproduced on bookmarks throughout the LARL region.

Katriana Mehlhaff received second place for her design for the book "Dark Life," and Emma Clark received an Honorable Mention for her design for the book "The Hunger Games."

Patriot's Pen

Holy Rosary Middle School students participated in the annual "Patriot's Pen" essay contest, organized by Leatrice Wirtz and sponsored by the local VFW.

Students presented their essays to a panel of judges on Monday, Nov. 5. The theme for this year's essays was "What I Would Tell America's Founding Fathers."
