Hegg wins district American Legion contest

Cole Hegg, Detroit Lakes High School junior and son of Justin and Monessa Hegg, won the 9th District American Legion Oratorical contest in Fergus Falls on Dec. 8.

Runner-up to Hegg was a junior girl from Twin Valley.

Hegg's 8-10 minute prepared oration is a comparison of our nation's early political climate in Washington, D.C., with today's.

The next contest for Hegg will be the Department of Minnesota finals on Feb. 1 in the Twin Cities. There he will compete against the nine other district winners. Sharon Josephson coaches Hegg.

Tom Frank, local American Legion Oratorical chair, started, "What we're most proud of is that Detroit Lakes has been represented at the district contest 34 of the past 36 contests. No other 9th district post can come close to this record.

"That also meant that many DLHS youth have studied extra about one of the world's most magnificent documents -- the U.S. Constitution, a document that men and women in military uniform have put themselves in harm's way to uphold and defend."
