County spellers compete at regions

Twenty-one spellers competed for five coveted spots in their quest to advance to the Multi-Region State Spelling Bee and a chance to win a trip to the Scripps National Bee in Washington, D.C.

Local competitors that advanced to the regional competition in Fergus Falls included Ben Blanchard and Mia Martinez of Detroit Lakes, Janai Seley of Lake Park Audubon and Audrey Swanson of Perham.

Jesemy Travers, a  7th grader from Moorhead, successfully spelled junta (pronounced hunta), to become the champion of the Region 4 Spelling Bee sponsored by Lakes Country Service Cooperative. 

Jayme Aune, 7th grader from Parkers Prairie, was first runner up after spelling adagio, meaning slowly, especially in music, and gourami, a brightly colored Asian fish. 

Jenn-Kaminski-Horak, a Fergus Falls 8th grader, Ethan Smith, a Moorhead 8th grader, and Allison Prestby, an Alexandria 7th grader also qualified as finalists and will compete in the State Bee.
