Lots happening this weekend in Detroit Lakes area

Detroit Lakes' Street Faire may be over and done for another year, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to do this weekend.

For the third year in a row, the Quake the Lake Power Boat Races will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, across from Zorbaz on Detroit Lake.

Warmups begin a noon, with races going from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. both days. There will be seven classes of boats, including GT Pro, VP75, Formula V Sport C, Formula 150, SST60 and SST120. It's the season opener for the Twin City Power Boat Association -- and best of all for those who are interested in coming to watch the action, it's free.

Then, on Saturday evening, the action switches to the Becker County Fairgrounds, for the annual Thunder in DL tractor pulling competition.

The Detroit Lakes event will open the season for the Red River Valley Pulling Association, which includes competitions in Perham and Park Rapids as well as North Dakota and up into Manitoba, Canada.

Tickets for Thunder in DL are $10 in advance and $12 at the gate. Those interested in advance tickets for the tractor pull can contact RRVPA Vice President Gene Brend at 847-6882. Gates open at 3 p.m., with the competition getting underway at 6 p.m.

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association will bring over 150 top professional contestants, both male and female, from 11 states to compete in seven action-packed events as they try to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals in Las Vegas, Nev.

Competitive events will include bareback riding, tie down roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, ladies' barrel racing, team roping and bull riding, as well as mutton busting for kids ages 4-8.
