Northwest Water Carnival starts this weekend

The fireworks are over and it's time to gear up for an even bigger celebration this weekend -- the opening of the Northwest Water Carnival.

Now in its 74th year, the NWC is Detroit Lakes' premier summer festival, attracting thousands of visitors over the course of a 10-day period.

This year's incarnation begins Friday with the crowning of the new Miss Northwest. The scholarship pageant gets underway at 7 p.m. Friday in the Historic Holmes Theatre.

Also on Friday, the Fourth Annual Habitat for Humanity Golf Scramble will be held at Forest Hills, starting at noon.

But the festivities kick into high gear on Saturday, with the Midsummer Bike Tour, 7-9 a.m.; Water Carnival Swim, 9 a.m.; DL Airport Fly-In & Pancake Breakfast, 9-11 a.m.; Jaycees Geocache Event, 9 a.m.; Kids' Midsummer Bike Tour, 10 a.m.; and the Demolition Derby, 6 p.m. With the exception of the fly-in breakfast at the DL Airport, and the demolition derby at the Becker County Fairgrounds, all of Saturday's events begin and end at the Pavilion.

On Sunday, July 12, the fun continues, with Button Daze from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wear your Water Carnival button and receive special discounts and free items from participating DL merchants.

A Detroit Lakes Angels game begins at 7 p.m. Sunday in Washington Park, and the first of two performances of "The Great American Trailer Park Musical" starts at 8 p.m. in the Historic Holmes Theatre.

Button Daze will continue Monday through Sunday, July 13-17, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at participating merchants.

Also on Monday, July 13, the NWC Junior Pageant begins at 6 p.m. in the DL Pavilion, and the final performance of "The Great American Trailer Park Musical" begins at 8 p.m. in the Historic Holmes Theatre.

On Tuesday, July 14, the Lakes Area Farmers Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the DL City Park, and the Water Carnival Talent Show begins at 7 p.m. in the DL Pavilion.

Next Wednesday, July 15, the Great Admiral's Hat Hunt begins at 4 p.m., continuing until the hat is found. There will be an Open Swim Meet from 4 to 6 p.m. in the BTD Aquatics Center at the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center. Other events will take place at the DL City Park, including the Junior Water Fights and Water Balloon Toss, 6 to 6:30 p.m.; Ice Cream Social, 6:30 to 7 p.m.; and one of the NWC's most popular events, the Water Fights, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The second weekend of the water carnival will be even more jam-packed with events, including the 15th annual NWC Legion Baseball Classic; a softball tournament; 5K fun run/walk; classic car show; ship building, sand castle, turtle racing and frog jumping contests; the Jaycees Chili Cookoff and more.
