Danza Española flamenco concert in NYM

Deborah Elias' Danza Española will bring the sights and sounds of traditional flamenco music to the stage of the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center this Sunday, April 3, for a 3 p.m. show.

The traditional trilogy of flamenco dance, guitar and song will come together for what Cultural Center executive director Jamie Robertson describes as "a magical afternoon of pure flamenco.

"Special guest singers La Conja and Vicente Griego join us from New York City and Albuquerque, N.M., to share the powerful singing that is the foundation of the flamenco art form -- singing so difficult and unique it is rarely heard in the Midwest.

"Joined with the heart-pounding footwork and graceful movements of leading dancer Deborah Elias and Colette Illarde, and the soulful chords of guitarist Trevor May, the program will present flamenco from the most serious cante jondo (deep song), to the light-hearted cante chico. This program will give audiences an exceptional opportunity to experience the strength and beauty of traditional flamenco in its full glory."

Tickets for Sunday's show are $12 in advance, or $15 the day of the concert, and may be reserved by telephone at 218-385-3339, or picked up at the Cultural Center box office at 24 Main Ave. N., New York Mills.

This activity is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature from the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on Nov. 4, 2008.
