Celebrating the New Year on Ice

A little glitz and glamour will be lighting up Detroit Lakes this New Year's Eve as the Kiwanis Club partners with the Holiday Inn for a formal and slightly swanky event.

It's called "New Years Eve on Ice," and although the Holiday Inn had its inaugural event last year, its new partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Detroit Lakes has evolved it into a larger, charitable event.

"They were looking for somebody to partner with them for this, and we were looking for a different, unique way to fundraise," said Kiwanis's co-chair for the event, Carrie Johnston, who says while the Holiday Inn has "tons of things" happening throughout the weekend, Kiwanis is putting on the evening's big dinner party.

Tickets for the event are $75 each.

"That includes a full four course meal with appetizers and salad, the meal, dessert, champagne, dinner music...just a real, formal New Years Eve party like you see in the movies," said Johnston.

There will also be a unique live auction for swanky desserts such as specialty cupcakes and cheesecakes from Creamy Creations.

"All of the desserts are from local businesses that can be quickly bid on for a little bit of local flavor -- kind of a fun little event," said Johnston, who says there will also be raffles for other prizes including some "fabulous" wine.

In the spirit of glitz and glamour, there will also be a coat check, roses for sale and photo opportunities.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails; dinner is at 7.

At 9, the band Face for Radio -- a rock-n-roll cover band -- will take the stage to rock partygoers into the new year, complete with a ball drop at midnight, champagne toast, noise makers and hats.

"We're going for kind of a sparkly evening," said Johnston.

"You're singing the traditional songs and dancing, having a couple of drinks and just like the movies, you get a chance to dress up, put on your suit coat and dance the night away."

Keeping safety in mind, the Holiday Inn is offering special room prices for ticket holders, which include two tickets to the event, a room for the evening and brunch for two the next morning for $235.

Money raised from the event will go towards the children's programs supported by the Kiwanis Club, including the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes, 4-H and more.

But unlike many other charity events, this time tickets will not be available at the door.

"Because we have to have an accurate number for the Holiday Inn of how many dinners to plan," said Johnston, who says they'll be capping the event at 200.

For tickets, call the Holiday Inn on the Lake at 847-2121 or Carrie Johnston at 841-0862.
