1-year-old girl remains hospitalized following car accident on Friday
DETROIT LAKES - A 1-year-old girl is in critical condition, according to the Minnesota State Patrol after a two-car head-on collision north of Detroit Lakes on County Highway 21 on Friday afternoon.
Abigail Fingalson was airlifted to MeritCare hospital in Fargo following the crash.
A MeritCare nursing supervisor said Sunday that the family had not given permission to release a condition report.
Blake Fingalson, 23, and Constance Fingalson, 21, both of Detroit Lakes, were in the car along with Abigail. They suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The southbound Dodge Neon driven by one of the Fingalson's lost control on the icy road and struck a northbound Buick LeSabre at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Tonya Azure, 33, of White Earth,, was the driver of the LeSabre with two passengers, ages 5 and 10. Each received non-life threatening injuries.
"It was so slippery they just hit head on," said Dan Mulari, who was one of the first people to arrive at the scene.
Light snowfall was starting to accumulate on the road, with several spots turning white.
Mulari said his was the second vehicle to arrive at the accident site just north of Bakke Lutheran Church.
He said that the child's heart stopped, but helpers at the scene were able to restart it.
The infant was in a car seat, Mulari said.
He added that a female who was in one of the vehicles may have had a compound fracture in her left leg.
"It's a mess," Mulari said of the accident scene.
Besides the Minnesota State Patrol, the Becker County Sheriff's Office, and the Detroit Lakes police and fire departments responded to the accident.
