The organization held numerous fundraisers and collected hundreds of dollars in donations. One event that contributed a great amount was "Shelterfest."

Even after the shelter opened, the Humane Society of the Lakes continued hosting the annual event, and has been for more than a decade, keeping its original name.

This year's Shelterfest will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 at Hotel Shoreham in Detroit Lakes with live music by Tim Sparks & Friends, a silent auction that ends at 9 p.m. and a raffle drawings at 10 p.m.

"In the past couple of years now, it's just been critical to (the shelter's) operating budget," said Beth Pridday, chair of the event.

The fundraiser, although necessary to help the shelter rescue as many animals as possible, is a "fun outdoor event," she added, that many look forward to.

There is no admission charge to attend Shelterfest. Raffle tickets are $2 and are sold at Hotel Shoreham, Becker Pet and Garden, the Humane Society of the Lakes, Cheryl Lynn's in Vergas and from humane society volunteers.

The raffle will award three large prizes: a custom-made Adirondack chair shaped like a fish, two golf club memberships and a $150 cash prize. Winners do not have to be present at the drawing on the day of the event to accept the prizes.

Last year, Shelterfest raised more than $6,500, Pridday said, adding that there have been years where it raised up to $10,000.

Humane Society of the Lakes manager Cassandra Disse said those who contribute donations are supporting the organization because it's able to provide care for as many animals as possible.

In 2009, the shelter took in 333 animals and found homes for 316, with the rest remaining at the facility.

"Sadly the amount of homeless animals within Becker County, as well as the surrounding counties, outnumbers the amount of space we have," Disse said.

Shelterfest is always held on the third Saturday of August, and it has been proven to be successful every year, she said.

"We're positive it will be successful again," Disse said.
