18-year-old Deer River man pleads guilt to second-degree murder
Darrek Jerome Porter, 18, of Deer River, pleaded guilty Monday in Itasca County District Court to one count of felony second-degree murder and three counts of felony second-degree assault, according to a press release from the Itasca County Attorney Office.
Porter is accused of stabbing to death Terrell Lee Wilson, 17, of Ball Club, and assaulting with a knife three other males in a Jan. 11 incident.
Porter was 17 years old when he was charged Jan. 13 in Itasca County Juvenile Court with two counts of felony second-degree murder and three counts of felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon against three other males.
He was certified as an adult April 25.
The prosecutor will recommend that the court sentence Porter to 15 years in prison according to the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines for second-degree murder, according to the press release. The assault offenses are recommended to be served concurrently.
The guilty pleas and recommendations are still subject to court approval.
Porter remains in the Itasca County Jail. Sentencing has been set for July 27.
