18-year-old man dies in crash near Lake Lida
PELICAN RAPIDS, Minn. - An 18-year-old man is dead after the car he was driving crashed head-on into a semitrailer this morning in Otter Tail County, Minnesota State Patrol Sgt. Jesse Grabow said.
The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family, he said.
The accident was reported just after 6:30 a.m. on Highway 108 about four miles east of Pelican Rapids, where the highway curves south at Lake Lida, Grabow said.
The 2003 Ford Mustang crossed the centerline and was hit by an oncoming grain-hauler semi,a 2006 Kenworth, which was empty, Grabow said.
The car's driver wasn't wearing his seat belt, and was trapped in the car,he said. The semi's driver was wearing a seat belt and not injured. A passenger in the semi, Lavern G. Monson, 43. of Dent, also did not appear to be injured.
Both vehicles were blocking the highway, closing it to traffic. The road reopened at 9 a.m., said Grabow.
The crash occurred on dry, two-lane blacktop.
Assisting at the scene were Ringdahl Ambulance, the Pelican Rapids Fire Department and MnDOT. An investigation is in progress.
