Minnesota 4-Hers from more than 85 counties returned from the 2012 "Great Minnesota Get-Together." Fourteen Becker County youth were included in the 2,785 exhibitors at the Minnesota State Fair.

They included Bonnie and Tyler Stalberger, Buffalo Badgers 4-H club, each showing a rabbit; Grace and Nathan Lacey (Sheep) and Cameron Trautman (Rabbit) from the Burlington Cubs 4-H Club; Bradey Okeson (Dairy Steer); Mike and Cody Okeson (Swine) from the Cloverdale 4-H Club; Lane and Emma Ulmer, Teddy Schauer (Beef) from the Franklin 4-H Club; Ashley Glawe (Beef) and Shania Lehman (Rabbit) Independents.

This annual event is a highlight for the livestock exhibitors as they have prepared all summer long to attend. If you asked any of the 4-H youth what they liked about showing livestock, they would probably tell you that it's fun.

The hidden benefit, however, is all that the youth are gaining in experience and knowledge. Education is integral in the "learn by doing" philosophy of 4-H.

As part of the educational component, Minnesota 4-H requires every youth participating in the livestock encampment to participate in a livestock interview. Along with interviews, all 4-H you must also complete the Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics training. Through this certification, youth are educated on biosecurity, educating the public on the role of livestock and caring for their animal's welfare.

In addition to the Becker County youth livestock exhibitors, for the first time in a decade, Becker County sent two "Share The Fun" acts to the State Fair. The Cloverdale 4-H Club performed their skit, "Twas the Night Before The Fair" before a large crowd.

Emily Freeh will represent Becker County and the Franklin 4-H Club during general encampment when she performs a piano solo.

Congratulations to all the Becker County 4-H youth that earned a trip to the State Fair. For information on how to enroll in 4-H, contact the Becker County Extension office at 846-7328. Now is the time to start planning for the 2013 4-H Program year.
