9-year-old seriously injured in lake mishap near Vergas
A 9-year-old boy sustained serious head injuries in a boating accident Sunday afternoon on Rose Lake, which is located northeast of Vergas.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department said the boy's condition was upgraded Monday from potentially life threatening to guarded. He was taken to Perham Hospital and later transferred to Fargo by helicopter.
According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred at about 4 p.m. Sunday as a boat operated by Dan Riehl, 39, Fargo, was pulling two 9-year-olds on a tube when the children were struck by a second boat.
A 9-year-old girl received minor injuries.
The accident was about 200 yards southeast of the Rose Shores Campground.
The boat that hit the children was also pulling tubers, according to witnesses at the scene, who added that the two boats involved in the accident were the only boats on the water at the time of the accident.
Alcohol or drug use were not factors in the cause of the accident. However, the incident remains under investigation by the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department.
