Adeline McKenzie

Adeline M. McKenzie, 88, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Oak Crossing, Detroit Lakes, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Adeline was born the daughter of Emil and Erna (Zitzow) Rosentreter on Jan. 16, 1921 in Vergas. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Vergas. Adeline was raised and educated in rural Vergas. As a young women, Adeline worked as a waitress at Fankhanel's in Vergas. She met the love of her life while serving him ice cream.

Adeline married Verlin McKenzie on Dec. 6, 1944 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Vergas. They made their home and farmed in rural Vergas until 1961, when they moved to Detroit Lakes. Adeline eventually went to work for Mayeron's Clothing Store and later the Shoe Inn in Detroit Lakes, retiring in 1980.

Adeline was a gifted baker, and was especially well known for the beautiful wedding cakes that she created. She crocheted blankets for each and every one of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, completing one just this past year. Addie also enjoyed dancing, gardening, and socializing with her many friends.

Spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was a very important part of Adeline's life, and something that she treasured. She was an exceptional cook and generous hostess, making sure that no one ever left her home hungry. Adeline was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church family for nearly 50 years.

Surviving Adeline are three sons, Laurel (Jackie) McKenzie, Darel (Mary) McKenzie and Dennis (Kristi) McKenzie, all of Detroit Lakes; a daughter, Charlyne McKenzie of Detroit Lakes; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; three brothers, Alvin (Ruth) Rosentreter and Melvin (Donna) Rosentreter, both of Vergas, and Ben (Lois) Rosentreter of Lindstrom, Minn.; three sisters, Gertrude Glawe of Detroit Lakes, Betty Glawe of Vergas and Dorothy Rehbein of Dent, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Jane Rosentreter of Fergus Falls; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Adeline in death were her parents; husband, Verlin (2003); great grandson, Hunter McKenzie; sister, Violet Hoffman; brother, Harry Rosentreter; and an infant sister, Viola Rosentreter.

Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6 at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7 at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Dan C. Abrahams officiating. Interment will be in the Vergas Village Cemetery, Vergas.
