African dancers to Irish musicians -- this season at Holmes
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

Though the 2009-10 season at the Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes doesn't officially get underway until Oct. 1, theater patrons and sponsors were given a special season preview this Thursday.

To introduce the "lineup" for the upcoming season, "anchors" Brett Wolf and Mike Stearns narrated a special show called "DLCCC Show Center" which featured music, video and photo highlights from each of the acts on the schedule.

Modeled on ESPN's popular show "Sports Center," the presentation included commercials featuring DLCCC staff, and even a blooper reel.

"Coach" Stu Omberg, the CEO of the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center, gave a mock press conference promising that negotiations were underway to add some "key players" to next year's lineup.

"Well, they're all key players," he added.

Omberg also noted that over 22,000 people attended shows at the Holmes Theatre in 2008-09, and there were 12 free or free will offering shows with an attendance of nearly 4,400.

Then Wolf and Stearns introduced the lineup, which begins with the Kusun Ensemble on Thursday, Oct. 1.

This ensemble of musicians and dancers from Ghana, West Africa will open both the Discovery Children's Series and the Showcase Series, with an afternoon show for area students and an evening show for the general public.

The Edge series, which showcases new and emerging artists, begins Oct. 8 with Trey Hensley. There will also be several "Season Extra" shows that are not included in the regular season packages, but can be added on or purchased separately.

The Community Connections series of local shows will also continue, with the Lakes Area Community Concert Band scheduled to perform on Nov. 22, Dec. 12 and April 17 in the theater. The Holmes Ballroom's Thursday Cabaret Nights series will also run once a month from October through March, with six shows featuring some of the lakes area's best musicians.

The Holmes Art Show will be held Nov. 19-20, the Christmas Marketplace on Dec. 5 and the Daddy's Little Sweeetheart Dance on Feb. 13.

New this year to the Community Connections series is the Holmes Spooky Reader's Theatre and "Not So Late Night" Halloween Movie on Saturday, Oct. 31.
