Alene Margaret Naastad was born to Lorentz and Louise (Berglund) Naastad on Dec. 14, 1924 in Aiktow, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was baptized in Canada. At the age of one year, she moved with her parents and brothers to Queen Township in Polk County, Minn. She was confirmed on April 22, 1939 by Rev. G. Gulberg at Cross Lake Lutheran Church, Queen Township, rural Fosston. She attended Happy Corner School in Queen Township and graduated from Fosston High School in 1942.

Alene went on to attend Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis, completing the secretarial finishing course and obtaining her first job at Graybar Electric Company in the Foshay Tower. She returned to Fosston in 1948.

On March 18, 1950 Alene married Arvid Clementson. They made their home in Fosston, where they lived most of their lives, except for some time in Texas in the 1950s. From this marriage five children were born: Bonnie, Dean, Nancy, Joseph and Jennifer. Arvid died in October 2006.

Alene continued her bookkeeping career, with employment over the years at the Fosston Creamery, KEHG Radio and the Fosston Municipal Hospital (now First Care), retiring in 1981.

Alene's greatest joy was her family: Raising her five children, seeing her grandchildren grow to adulthood and sharing in the recent birth of her first great grandchild. Her extended family was very important to her, and she loved keeping family genealogy and traditions alive.

Arvid and Alene had many travels both within and outside the U.S., with a highlight being their trip to Norway.

Alene was a member of her Birthday Club for over 50 years. She always looked forward to the monthly birthday parties with her dear friends. Alene stayed close to several of her childhood friends and high school classmates. In addition to her family, friends and travel, Alene enjoyed needlework, music and sharing her husband's passion for the community of Fosston. She was a lifetime member of the Spring Lake Auxiliary 2579 of Lengby and the Tangen-Walstrom Auxiliary 114 of Fosston.

Surviving Alene are her children, Bonnie (Michael) Stewart of Fosston, Nancy (Gary) Laines of Wheaton, Minn., Joe (Sandy) Clementson of Staten Island, N.Y., and Jennifer (Jeff Thompson) Harris of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and one great grandson; sisters-in-law, Norma Dillenburg of Grand Forks, N.D., Edna Mae Clementson of Clarkston, Wash., and Ethel Naastad of Lengby, Minn.; brother-in-law, Hayden Thompson of Vail, Colo.; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Arvid; parents, Lorentz and Louise Naastad; son Dean; and three brothers, Lester, John and Vernon Naastad.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 16, followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service, at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, April 17 at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston, with the Rev. John Dalen officiating. Interment will be in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery.
