Alex goes on scoring streak to down Laker girls' hockey
Six unanswered goals by the visiting Alexandria Cardinals erased an impressive 2-1 first period lead for the Detroit Lakes girls' hockey team, as they suffered an early-season setback with a 7-2 loss Thursday.
Capping a solid first period with goals by each of forwards Emily Payne and Brianna Seebold, the Lakers saw their lead evaporate within the first four minutes of the second period, when the Cardinals struck paydirt three times for a 4-2 edge.
The slide continued in the third period, where Alexandria added three more goals for the 7-2 victory.
"We lost our feet and the majority of their goals came when we quit moving our feet," said DL head coach Dan Maloney. "It's a crucial lesson these girls learned tonight. The result of that second period came when they didn't sustain pressure on Alex."
Seebold maintained her searing scoring pace in three games by producing two points, including an assist on Payne's goal and a tally herself in the first period to break a 1-1 tie.
The sophomore forward already has seven assists and one goal on the season in three games.
The Lakers had some momentum in the first period when Payne converted the first goal at the 4:15 mark, while Alexandria tied it on a Michelle Anez tally 3:30 later.
Seebold broke the tie on the assist by Callie Johnson to give DL their first lead over Alexandria after an entire period in quite some time.
"I thought the girls worked hard in the first period," Maloney said. "We outshot them 9-7. But the thing is when we get a lead, we need to keep our composure. But I know this team will learn something from this game."
Freshman goalie Veronica Roy had six stops in the first period, until the Cardinals racked up their pressure in the second and third periods for a total of 28 shots.
The Cardinals' Alia Kopischke had three goals on the night, and Alexandria had three breakaway scores, including two power play tallies.
DL (0-3) was doubled up by Brainerd/Little Falls Tuesday on the road 8-4. Once again, the Lakers scored first on Callie Johnson's third goal of the season just 2:03 into the game.
The Warriors took a 2-1 advantage into the first period intermission on goals by Sarah Gorvin and Elizabeth Deroser.
Payne tied the game up on a power play opportunity with the assist being credited to Alyssa Boyle, but the Warriors went for back-to-back scores by Molly Peltoma to jump out 4-2.
The Lakers responded with their second power play score off the stick of Boyle, but three consecutive goals by the Warriors put the game out of reach.
Johnson added her fourth goal of the season at the 10:56 mark to cap DL's scoring.
Roy finished with 14 saves, while the Lakers produced just 12 shots on net.
"I thought we played three solid periods of hockey, the girls kept their feet moving and they played good hockey," Maloney said. "We've played three very good opponents so far and we've been right there and competing well."
The Lakers hosted Sartell Saturday and will travel to Moorhead Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start.
