Alexandria to host 27th annual Vikingland Band Festival
The Vikingland Band Festival Internatinoal Parade and Marching Championship will kick off its 27th annual event on Sunday, June 26 starting at 1:30 p.m., with participating bands performing along Alexandria's Broadway.
This year's event features 19 of the finest high school marching bands in the Midwest.
More than 20,000 spectators take in the event each year, which typically features more than 2,000 performers. Seven different bands have claimed the Grand Champion title since the festival's inception.
Leading the parade will be this year's grand marshal, Margaret "Peggy" Atwood.
Atwood boasts a 35-year teaching career in Alexandria, where she served as a middle school orchestra teacher from 1975 through her retirement in 2010.
"Peggy's career exemplifies a long-standing commitment to Alexandria, and she has enriched the lives of countless music students," said event coordinator Greg DeGier.
