All-Star Revue, Frazee Oktoberfest on Sunday
Wednesday, Sept. 30
On Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 3 to 6 p.m., Emmanuel Community will host a celebration in honor of its 45-year anniversary. The theme for the celebration is sapphire. Antique jewelry featuring the gem will be given away that afternoon, and there will be music, hors d'oeuvres and champagne. Other events going on during the day include an antique car show, a blessing service officiated by Chaplain Vicki Marthaler, giveaways sponsored by longtime friends of Emmanuel, a quilt show, musical entertainment and tours.
Power of observation
How would you be as a witness? A fun, but serious session testing your powers of observation will be presented by Shannan Monroe, Moorhead deputy chief of police. At 7 p.m. in the Lake Park-Audubon Elementary Library in Audubon. It is free and open to the public.
Thursday, October 1
The 2009-10 season at Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre begins Thursday, Oct. 1 with a 7:30 p.m. performance by West Africa's Kusun Ensemble. This extraordinary group of musicians, singers and dancers from Ghana, West Africa has created a unique and innovative stage show by fusing electrifying jazz and African rhythms, using bass and lead guitar along with traditional Ghanaian instruments. Damien Home Tour
The Damien Home Tour is from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 in Detroit Lakes. Be prepared for a few surprises at this year's "Expect the Unexpected." Tickets are $15 and available from Damien members, Detroit Paint & Glass, La De Da and the Holmes Theatre ticket office.
Vergas Leaf Day
Vergas Leaf Day hosts hayrides and street sales, farmer's market items, live music and food along Main Street on Saturday, Oct. 3. Wee Willie will be playing at the Community Center from 6 to 9 p.m. and a supper will be served.
Sunday, October 4
The Lakes Area Music Teachers (LAMT) will present an "All-Star Revue" featuring some of the lakes area's best musical entertainers at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4 in First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Scheduled performers include the Laker Singers, Kathryn Knuttila, Emma Wood, Diane Jordan, Russ Bunker, Tim Eggebraaten, Kathy Larson, The Front Row, Erlene DeCock, Dutton Family, Doug Newman, Kim Schnitzer & Vicki Marthaler, Lori Paakh, Melody Bober and Paul Heisler. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, and can be purchased at Central Market, First Lutheran Church and The Sound Shop in Detroit Lakes as well as at Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham. Proceeds will go toward scholarships for the LAMT's senior piano and voice students.
The Danish quartet "Krauka" will perform at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. The group plays ancient tunes of the Vikings as well as contemporary compositions in the same tradition. Admission to the concert is $12 in advance or $15 on the day of the concert. Tickets are available from the Center.
Frazee's 2009 Oktoberfest celebration is from noon to 8 p.m. in the Frazee Event Center. The Country Polkateers and the Leon Olsen Band will be playing. Admission is $10 per person, and German food and a cash bar will be available.
