All-State Band: DL senior finishes high school on a happy note
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

This Friday, March 15, students from around the area will be coming to Detroit Lakes High School to audition for the Minnesota Music Educators Association’s All-State Band and All-State Choir.

Last year at this time, DLHS student Amber Davidson was among those hopefuls auditioning for a spot with the All-State Band, as a trombone player.

“You have to prepare a set of scales, and an etude, as well as prepare for some sight reading — and then in March, you have a live audition,” Davidson said.

A few weeks after that audition, she was informed by her band instructor, Heather Trowbridge, that she had been successful.

“This is the first time in 10 years that someone from Detroit Lakes has made All State Band,” Trowbridge noted.

“It was a big surprise,” Davidson noted. “It feels really good.”

It was an opportunity that she had been working toward since she first started playing trombone in the fifth grade.

Earning All-State Band honors meant that Davidson not only was invited to participate in a week-long summer music camp last August, but also to work with a well-known conductor, Tad Suzuki, and perform at Bethel University’s Benson Hall in Arden Hills, Minn., on Feb. 16.

“He was excellent,” Davidson said of Suzuki.

Having the opportunity to work with so many talented musicians also cemented Davidson’s passion for music.

“When you’re working with people who really like to make music, it’s a great feeling, to create something that’s beautiful and meaningful to others,” she said.

“I would really like to thank the school, and everyone involved in giving me this opportunity.”

A senior at DLHS this year, Davidson said that she may not immediately enter college next fall, but “whatever college I go to, I plan on participating in their music program — it may not be my major (which will most likely be history) but I still want to be involved in music.”
