Feb. 27, 1947-Aug. 8, 2006
Alvin G. Sweep, 59, of Mahnomen, died Tuesday, August 8, 2006, as a result of a farm accident.
Alvin George Sweep was born to Arendt and Sena Sweep on Feb. 27, 1947, in Mahnomen. He attended school in Bejou through the eighth grade, and graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1965. Following high school, Alvin attended Minnesota State University-Moorhead for a year and then joined the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War.
On July 25, 1968, Alvin married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Trnka. They made their home in Fayetteville, N.C., where their children, Nathan and Tami, were born. After an honorable discharge in 1970, Alvin and Shirley moved back to Minnesota and farmed with Shirley's parents for several years. Alvin then managed Waubun Cattle Ranch for two years before the couple purchased their own farm. The couple had three more children: Russell, Chad and James. Alvin and Shirley operated a dairy farm until 2002, becoming grain farmers, which they continued to do until Alvin's death. Alvin was working on getting his CDL in order to drive for Trans Systems this fall and winter.
Alvin was a talker and always had a joke to share. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, both building and restoring vehicles with his sons, and teaching his grandkids to operate equipment. Alvin fufilled his life long dream of buying hunting land and building a log cabin by hand, with his sons. However, a dream that was not fulfulled was getting a shot at "Big Billy."
