Amateur baseball: Angels put the clincher on Hi-10 title
The Detroit Lakes Angels claimed the HI-10 West Championship Wednesday evening after defeating rival Perham Pirates 4-3 in a close game at Washington Ballpark.
The Angels (17-10) have been blessed with good pitching, timely hitting and a quality defense which has helped them to go 11-2 in conference play so far this season.
Perham put the first run on the board in the first inning after back-to-back singles off Angels starting pitcher Brock Johnson, but the Angels responded with RBI hits from Phil Kirchner and Mark Gulseth for a 2-1 lead.
The Pirates matched the Angels with another two in the top of the second of an RBI double and single to take a 3-2 lead.
The Angels followed up with another two runs in the bottom half of the inning when Trevor Tappe and Andy Fonderick scored on a Brian Buhr double.
That marked the end of the scoring in the game. After the second inning it became a straight pitching matchup between Angels Brock Johnson and Pirates starting pitcher Tate Dahl.
In the end, Johnson came out on top, though, finishing with 13 strikeouts and a complete game.
The Angels finish the regular season next Friday, in which they will be taking on Bertha at Washington Park.
