American Crystal pays fine, takes actions to reduce pollution at East Grand Forks facility
Moorhead-based American Crystal Sugar Co. has paid a $24,943 penalty and taken corrective actions to reduce air pollution from emissions at its East Grand Forks facility, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says.
A review of 2009-2011 company reports revealed that fine particle emissions from kilns at the sugar beet processing plant had exceeded permitted limits, according to a news release issued today by the MPCA.
The agency also found that equipment used to monitor emissions was out of service for extended periods, and that the plant failed to record a number of daily inspections required for equipment used to monitor the air pressure on either side of filters that capture emissions.
Some readings that were recorded showed pressure differentials across the filters that were outside the range allowed by the permit, which can indicate a problem that needs fixing to minimize emissions, the release stated.
