Detroit Lakes native Amy Beth Darnell, 19, of Apache Junction, Ariz., passed away Monday, July 12, 2010, with her family by her side, after a month long battle with a leukemia relapse.
Amy was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia) at the age of 13. After six years of being cancer free, her leukemia returned.
Amy was born October 27, 1990 in Detroit Lakes. She moved to Arizona at the age of three, and graduated from Apache Junction High School in May 2009. She completed training at the Airline Academy in Daytona Beach, Fla., in September 2009. At the time of her death she was employed by Waffle House.
Amy touched the hearts of many and will be remembered for her love of sports and animals. She was active in Girl Scouts, played tackle football in middle school, and participated in track, basketball and softball. She was on the AJHS swimming team.
Amy had many pets through her lifetime, including Daisy, who was there by her side to comfort her during her treatments the first time, and by her again now in heaven. She leaves us with her dogs, Dozsha and Roxy.
Amy is survived by her mother and stepfather, Renee and Gary Nelson; father, Leon Darnell; her sister, Molly (Matt) Beaver; brother, Thomas Darnell; stepbrothers, Tanner and Hunter Nelson; and one very special niece, Madyson Beaver.
Preceding her in death were her grandparents; uncles Douglas, James and Joel Flatt; and her aunt, Linda Flatt-Wehmhoefer.
From Amy's Facebook page: LIFE IS CRAZY!!! Take it as it comes. The past is the past, it happens for a reason. Always remember it, but do not dwell on it for you should dwell on the future for that is what is most important.
