Former Ogema resident Amy Teiken DeGroat, 54, of Elk River, Minn., died Monday, November 29, 2010 at her home, following a 2-year battle with cancer.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1 at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Ogema, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to mass at the church on Thursday.
A mass of Christian burial is set for 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 at Most Holy Redeemer Church, with Father Walter Butor, O.M.I., officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Amy Franscilla DeGroat was born to Vernon and Elizabeth "Betty" (Schreiner) Teiken on August 3, 1956 in Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Waubun High School. Following graduation, she worked at Hedahl's in Detroit Lakes.
Amy was united in marriage to Johnny DeGroat April 4, 1978. They made their home in Elk River, where she worked for Kwik Files for 16 years. She then worked for CNC OPPS part-time, until being diagnosed with cancer. She then worked for Reinhart Foods and enjoyed a part-time bus route with the special needs students in Elk River.
Amy was devoted to her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandma. She loved people, country music and playing cards, was a great bowler and enjoyed her Friday nights with her lady friends playing cards.
Amy will be missed and remembered by her husband Johnny of Elk River; two sons, Wade (Sara) of Ramsey, Minn., and Chad of Elk River; three daughters, Jenny of Elk River, Carrie of Princeton, Minn., and Amanda (Troy) of Buffalo, Minn.; five grandsons, Timmothy, Anthony, Allen, Tayt and Andrew; five granddaughters, Makayla, Ema, Kalene, Christene and Calissa; her mother, Betty Teiken of Ogema; four brothers, Tom (Janice) of Ogema, Mark (Phylliss) of Mahnomen, Carl (Merry) of Ogema and Allen "Bud" (Teresa) of Ogema; six sisters, Mary (Jim) Mott of Grand Forks, N.D., Jean Beaupre of Fargo, Linda (Lloyd) Jirava of Ogema, Margaret (Wally) Lefebvre of Callaway, Rita (Brad) Westlund of Lake Park and Judy (Richie) Berger of Waubun; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her father, Vernon; a nephew, Michael Teiken; brother-in-law, William Beaupre; and grandparents, Herman and Margaret Teiken and Henry and Catherine Schreiner.
