The Detroit Lakes Angels started the defense of their Hi-10 Leauge championship Wednesday with a 10-2 win over visiting Bertha.

The Angels, seeded No. 4 in the league playoffs, advanced to round two in the double-elimination format, visiting top-seeded Wadena-Deer Creek Saturday (results will be in Wednesday's Becker County Record).

The Angels kickstarted their offense early, as Taylor Fuhs' single in the first scored Phil Kirchner, who reached on a walk, to give the Angels a 1-0 lead.

The gap widened in the second inning for the Angels, who scored four times. The frame was highlighted by an RBI single by Kirchner and a bases-loaded walk by Terry Haus.

A sacrifice fly by Fuhs and a Chris Engberg run scored on an error capped DL's big inning, for the 5-0 lead.

The Blazers cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the third, with the help of an Angels' error and a couple of walks by Angels' starter Matt Olson.

The Angels added a run in the fifth on a double steal by Matt Nustad and Fuhs -- who went 3-3, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Fuhs later scored on the play.

In the sixth, the Angels blew the doors off the Blazers by scoring four runs -- two on a Nustad single, a sacrifice fly by Nick Omberg and a Haus RBI single.

Olson started for the Angels and went the distance, as he allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits. Olson walked four and struck out nine.

Carl Admundson took the loss for the Blazers.
