Angels creep closer to Region 14C berth
The Detroit Lakes Angels survived another day to try and earn their third consecutive berth in the Region 14C playoffs.
The Angels staved off elimination in the Hi-10 League playoffs Sunday with a 14-11 win over the Perham Pirates, setting up a rematch with Bluffton tonight (Wednesday) in New York Mills.
The winner will advance to the Region 14C playoffs.
After a 2-1 loss to the last place New York Mills Millers on Wednesday, the Perham Pirates were eliminated, with the aid of four errors and 12 DL hits.
DL catcher Taylor Fuhs paced the Angels with a 4-4 day, along with three RBIs and three runs scored.
The Angels got the scoring started in the first when Fuhs scored on a ground out by Phil Doll.
The Pirates answered with three runs of their own in the home half of the first, as Tyler Doll, Andy Kratzke and Eric Weller each drove in runs.
DL regained the lead in the second, as two runs scored on errors before Fuhs drove in the inning's third run with a triple off the right field fence.
He later scored to put the Angels up 5-3.
The Angels scored single runs in the third and fourth before opening the game up with a five-run fifth.
Fuhs drove in two more runs with a double, and scored his third run of the game to put DL up 12-4.
Angel pitcher Jason Berg tired and was replaced after the fifth inning, when the Pirates touched him for three more runs.
Perham inched back into the game with three runs in the seventh, two scored on a single by Tyler Doll. They scored another run in the eighth to make the score 13-11.
But the Angels tacked on an insurance run in the ninth and held Perham scoreless in the final half inning to move on in the HI-10 playoffs.
Berg picked up the win for the Angels with his five innings of work.
Bryan Buhr pitched the final four to close out the victory.
Weller started for Perham and took the loss, while Taylor Doll pitched the final four innings for the Pirates.
Angels blanked in Wadena
Jordan Wohlwend -- who already had pitched a perfect game earlier this season -- used his bending breaking ball to stall the Angels' bats for a 10-0 win Friday in Wadena.
The top-seeded Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers also played flawless defense behind Wohlwend, while DL committed six errors, leading to seven unearned runs.
DL didn't make any serious threats on Wohlwend, as only one Angel advanced past second base and two past first.
Chris Gilson pitched the first six innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs, while Jon Tolbert threw the final two innings and had three unearned runs given up to invoke the 10-run mercy rule in the bottom of the eighth.
Wohlwend shut the Angels down with just five hits, while the Shockers had a total of seven in the game.
