Angels down Loons
DETROIT LAKES - The Detroit Lakes Angels used speed and opportune hitting to beat the Vergas Loons 9-1 in the opening game of the Detroit Lakes Tournament Wednesday at Washington Ballpark.
Detroit Lakes didn't rely much on power, even if there were a couple of chances to showcase it. Angels co-manager and outfielder Phil Kirchner just missed hitting a three-run shot in the third when two bombs went foul.
Kirchner ended up reaching on a walk.
He had another chance in the fourth with the bases loaded and took some hards cuts, before popping out to end the inning.
Those lost opportunities didn't hurt, as eight of nine Angel batters made it on base.
"We're swinging well and putting the ball into play," Kirchner said.
Left fielder Taylor Fuhs showed off his wheels in tying the game at 1-1 in the first.
Fuhs led off Detroit Lakes' first with a walk and took second with a steal.
A double by Kirchner brought him in.
In the third, Fuhs helped the Angels take the lead as he made a smart base-running decision.
Fuhs was hit by a pitch to get on first.
Another plunking allowed by Vergas starter Jeremy Larr put him on second.
Larr's control problems continued, as he threw a wild pitch and bounced to the backstop. Fuhs made it to third easily, and noticed Larr wasn't covering home as Loons catcher A.J. Bunkowske had trouble getting control of the ball.
Fuhs darted home and scored without a play at the plate, as Bunkowske didn't notice Fuhs until he was nearly home.
Nick Omberg, who was the second Detroit Lakes player hit by a pitch in the third, came in from Phil Doll's sac fly to right.
Doug Dickey added an RBI single that put the Angels up 4-1.
Fuhs and Omberg produced runs in the sixth with an RBI each. Fuhs' came from a sacrifice fly, and Omberg singled.
The scoring stopped in the seventh, with Detroit Lakes adding three to go up by eight.
Bryan Buhr had a two-RBI single and Fuhs scored Matt Huberty off of an RBI double.
Vergas scored first in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Kerry Lockrem doubled and Jake Sailer produced an RBI single.
Detroit Lakes starter Chris Gilson picked up the win, going seven strong innings and striking out eight.
Max Saarinen pitched the final two and struck out three.
Kirchner said that Gilson's gem complemented the hitting game well.
The Angels continued their tournament Saturday at 7 p.m., playing a yet-unknown opponent.
Detroit Lakes was trying to fill a tournament spot, as the Bagley Thundercats had to withdraw due to a death of a player, Kirchner said.
