Angels drop season opener to Wadena-Deer Creek
The Detroit Lakes Angels dropped their season opener 7-2 to the Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers on Sunday afternoon in Deer Creek.
Wadena-Deer Creek used a five-run eighth inning to break a 2-all tie. Max Saarinen gave up three walks in the inning, with the defense committing two errors. The Shockers only had one hit in the eighth.
Hurting Detroit Lakes the most was the defense committing six errors in all.
The game was scoreless until the fifth until Saarinen hit a solo home run to left center to break the deadlock. W-DC came right back to tie the game as Seth Hamann led off with a single and was bunted over to second. Jamie Nordlund brought in Hamann with a RBI single.
The Shockers took the lead in the sixth on an unearned run.
The Angels tied it at two in the eighth after Saarinen was hit by a pitch. Chris Gilson tried to bunt him over and ended up reaching first on an error. Kyle Danner sacrificed both runners up.
After Nick Omberg struck out for the second out, Phil Kirchner drew a walk as the Shockers pitched around him to load the bases. Taylor Fuhs drew a walk to bring Saarinen in.
Jon Tolbert pitched seven strong innings in allowing one earned run. For the Shockers, Tyler Wohlwend went the first eight in picking up the win and allowing only three hits,
Saarinen led the offense with 2-for-3 performance with Phil Doll and Chris Engberg picking up the other two Angels' hits.
The Angels next game will be versus the New York Mills Millers on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Washington Park.
