Angels handle Millers easily
The Detroit Lakes Angels amateur baseball team jumped back on the same track as they finished on in 2012 with a convincing 16-2 season opening win over visiting New York Mills Sunday on the DLHS field.
It didn’t take long, either, as the Angels jumped on Miller starting pitcher Jeff Hamann with three runs in the bottom of the first.
The hitting barrage continued, as DL racked up 17 hits in the win. Last year’s Region 14C MVP Mark Gulseth went 4-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs, while catcher Doug Dickey also went a perfect 4-4 with three RBIs.
Bryan Buhr picked up the victory with five innings of action, allowing eight hits and just one run scored.
The season and game started with Phil Kirchner singling to right, before Buhr walked and Mark Gulseth doubled in Kirchner.
A one-out single by Doug Dickey scored Buhr and a fielder’s choice by Trevor Tappe scored Gulseth.
The Angels scored a run in the third, after Kirchner was hit by a pitch with bases loaded.
The Angels cracked the Millers’ back by scoring five runs in the fourth.
DL batters picking up the big hits were Kirchner with a triple which scored two, Steve Fuhs with a RBI single, a sac fly from Doug Dickey and an RBI double by Tappe.
The Angels scored seven runs in the fifth frame off of Miller reliever Josh Hendrickx on seven hits.
Dickey and Gulseth each had two hits in the inning.
The Millers scored a single run in the second inning on an RBI double by Adam Patron, and a run in the seventh inning on a Wahlgren single.
For the Millers, Jeff Hamann and Alex Helmeke each had two hits.
Gulseth pitched the sixth inning for DL and Trevor Tappe pitched the seventh, giving up a run.
For the Millers Jeff Hamann started and gave up nine runs through 4.2 innings.
With Steve Fuhs playing second base for the Angels, it was the first time the Laker head baseball coach played in live competition since the early 1990’s, when he played for the first-version of the Angles.
He also was able to play with his son, Taylor, for the first time, as well. Steve went 2-4 with an RBI.
The Angels’ next game is Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. in Pelican Rapids.
