The Detroit Lakes Angels opened their tournament with a 9-1 win over the Vergas Loons on Wednesday at Washington Ballpark.

Vergas scored first in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Kerry Lockrem doubled and Jake Sailer produced an RBI single.

The Angels came right back when leadoff man Taylor Fuhs reached on a walk, stole second and then scored on Phil Kirchner's double.

Fuhs would put the Angels up in the third when he scored after Frazee pitcher Jeremy Larr through a wild pitch that let Fuhs go from second to third, and then didn't cover home. Fuhs came in easily.

The Angels scored two more after Larr controlled his wildness, but ended up throwing right down the strike zone.

Detroit Lakes starter Chris Gilson picked up the win, going seven innings and striking out eight.

The Angels continue their tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. playing a yet-unknown opponent. Detroit Lakes is trying to fill a tournament spot as the Bagley Thundercats had to withdraw due to a death of a player, said Angels co-manager Kirchner.
