For most of the 2013 season, newly-acquired Derek Zitzow proved over and over to be the Detroit Lakes Angels’ stopper on the mound and Sunday in Deer Creek, he did it again in an elimination game during the Hi-10 playoffs.

Zitzow pitched nine innings and allowed just four hits, while Connor McLeod shut the door on the Shockers, as the Angels clinched their Region playoffs berth with a 3-2 10-inning win.

Shocker pitcher Jordan Wohlwand was just as effective, as he limited the Angels to eight scattered hits. Wohlwand went eight inning with Jayme George taking the loss after pitching the final two.

Zitzow picked up the win after pitching nine innings and giving up two unearned runs. McLeod added the save by pitching a perfect 10th frame.

The Angels clinched their regional bid in the top of the 10th inning, after Zitzow railed a deep sacrifice fly on a pinch hit at-bat, easily scoring Ryan Berg, who was running for Doug Dickey.

DL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth and a one-out double by Mark Gulseth was followed with a double by Taylor Fuhs.

In the eighth, Chris Gilson walked with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a Reed Oistad infield single.

The Shockers tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a Travis George hit, which went between an Angel infielder’s legs and allowed two runs to score.

Zitzow struck out Jake Krause to end the inning.

The Angels started the Hi-10 League playoffs with a 5-1 win over Bluffton Friday in Audubon, as Brock Johnson pitched for the win.

Johnson allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings of action, while Reed Oistad and Connor McLeod each wrapped up the victory.

Phil Kirchner railed a two-run homer in the third inning to put DL up 3-0, with Zitzow adding an RBI single in the sixth and Kirk McLeod a run-producing hit in the fifth.

The Angels had nine hits, led by Kirchner and Gilson’s two hits apiece.

Bertha topped the Angels Saturday 10-4 behind a 14-hit brigade, as DL had five errors on top of that.

Bertha sealed the game with a four-run eighth to extend a 6-3 lead to 10-3.

Trevor Tappe took the loss, while DL had only three hits.
