The Detroit Lakes Angels finished third in their annual home tournament after splitting a pair of games Saturday and Sunday.

Detroit Lakes beat the Staples Lumberbats 4-1 Sunday afternoon in the third-place matchup.

"We didn't score a lot of runs, but did enough to win," said Angels outfielder and co-manager Phil Kirchner.

The Angels put a run up in three consecutive innings - the second, third and fourth.

Staples put up its lone run in the sixth, with the Angels responding in the sixth.

Both pitching staffs kept the batters at bay with the Angels duo of Matt Huberty and Bryan Buhr allowing six hits, and the Lumberbats giving up three hits.

Detroit Lakes was active on the basepaths a four players stole a base.

Huberty took the win in pitching five innings, striking out five and not allowing any runs in the seven-inning game.

Saturday's semifinal game between the Angels and the Jamestown, N.D. Elks was a slugfest for the visitors as Jamestown won 16-0.

The game was cut short from seven innings to six due to the mercy rule.

Jamestown led 8-0 after five innings and then exploded after Angels reliever Kyle Danner gave up eight additional runs. Max Saarinen took the loss.

"We played decent until the sixth," Kirchner said. "Then we missed some plays at first and not throwing strikes."

The younger Angels also had a chance to take the field in place of the Bagley Thundercats squad that cancelled their tournament appearance due to the death of a player.

The younger Detroit Lakes team lost to the Crookston Reds 12-0 Sunday in the seventh-place game.

Detroit Lakes starter Justin Berg, just coming back after undergoing shoulder surgery last December, gave up four runs in 2 1/3 innings pitched. Two of those runs were unearned and he struck out three.

Kirchner was pleased with Berg's performance and is counting on him in the stretch run of the regular season.

"He's a great addition and we're glad to see him back," Kirchner said.

The Angels are back in action this weekend with a pair of home games.

Detroit Lakes takes on the Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and face the Bertha Blazers in a doubleheader Sunday starting at 1:30 p.m. Both games are Hi-10 League tilts.

"We've had a lot of turnover from last year and hope to put it all together for the last month of the regular season," Kirchner said,
