Angels use 13 walks and 13 hits in season opening win
Patience and aggression each paid off for the Detroit Lakes Angels amateur baseball team in its season-opening win in Wolf Lake Saturday, winning 13-6.
The Angels drew 13 walks, but also ripped 13 hits, which included a four-run first inning and RBI hits by Phil Kirchner, Taylor Fuhs and Doug Dickey.
Fuhs continued proving to be one of the best hitters in the league by going 5-5, with two doubles and an RBI. Chris Gilson also used speed and the gaps to pick up three doubles and an RBI.
The Angels blew the doors off the Wolf Pack, extending a 6-5 lead into a 13-5 advantage with a seven-run sixth frame.
Trevor Tappe started the rally with a single, followed by an A.J. Matter walk, with Mark Jorgenson singling to center scoring Tappe.
Gilson doubled to left scoring Matter, while Brian Buhr singled to score Jorgenson with Gilson scoring on a bad throw, Phil Kirchner walked, Fuhs singled in Buhr.
Dickey and Phil Doll followed with walks and a Tappe fielder’s choice put the Angels up 13-5.
Wolf Lake scored one in the seventh inning off of Tappe, as the leadoff hitter tripled and scored on a fielder’s choice.
Matter made his amateur debut on the mound, allowing four hits and five runs, while veteran Buhr picked up the win with three innings of work to blank the Wolf Pack of any runs.
The Angels will host their home opener against Wolf Lake Friday, starting at 8:30 p.m. at Washington Ballpark.
