Former Grand Forks, N.D., resident Anna Marie Smaaland, 81, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.
Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21 at Dahl Funeral Home, 2029 Central Ave. NW, East Grand Forks, Minn., with interment in South Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 and one hour prior to Tuesday's services, also at at the funeral home.
Anna Marie Smaaland was born the daughter of Louis and Alice (Biss) Hillebrand on October 20, 1930 in McVille, N.D. She married LeRoy Smaaland on September 29, 1949 on the family farm in rural Adler Township, Nelson County, Minn. She worked at Whitey's and the Diamond Lounge for a short period of time and then the dietary department of United Hospital in Grand Forks, until her retirement.
Surviving Anna are one daughter, Mary Jane (Dennis) Johnson of Detroit Lakes; one son, Richard Smaaland of Grand Forks; two granddaughters, Christine (Michael) Fields of Detroit Lakes and Katie (Victor) Joern-Johnson of Dublin, Ga.; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Yvonne (Sanford) Hoge of Aneta, N.D., and Barbara (James) Dahl of Northwood, N.D.; one brother, Wilford (Vicki) Hillebrand of Grand Forks; as well as stepchildren, Robert (Laurie) Johnson of Devils Lake, N.D., and Tracy Johnson (Ryan Kasten) of Marlborough, Mass.
Preceding Anna in death were her parents and her husband, LeRoy.
