Area high schoolers take part in Envirothon
The Area I Senior Envirothon was held at Prairie Wetlands Learning Center in Fergus Falls on May 7.
The weather was chilly, but all stations were held outside. There were a few more teams than last year and still had a great time challenging young minds with conservation practices.
Twenty-three teams participated from five area schools: Detroit Lakes, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Fergus Falls, Pelican Rapids and Underwood.
All students were tested on five learning stations in the following areas: Wetlands, Wildlife, Forestry, Soils and Current Events. This year’s current event was “Sustainable Agriculture in Minnesota.”
Natural resource professionals from agencies such as US Fish and Wildlife, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Minnesota Board of Water & Soil Resources, and personnel from the Prairie Wetlands Center presented at each station and assessed the student’s knowledge of the natural world.
Each team of students consisted of five members, which worked together to answer 25 questions presented at each station.
Winners from the 2014 Area I Senior Envirothon were:
- First place: Underwood High School
- Second place: Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School
- Third place: Fergus Falls High School
These top three teams continued to the state competition which was held at St. John’s University in Collegeville on May 19. Twenty-eight teams from all around the state competed for a chance to represent Minnesota at the Regional Stewardship Challenge at Loyola University-Chicago in Woodstock, Ill., from Aug. 3-8.
The teams will be competing at the Regional Stewardship Challenge for scholarships and prizes.
The winning teams from the State Envirothon competition are as follows:
- First place: Stillwater High School
- Second place: Hopkins High School
- Third place: St. John’s Preparatory School, Collegeville
