Area schools participate in annual Area I Senior Envirothon challenge
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

The Area I Senior Envirothon was held at Prairie Wetlands Learning Center in Fergus Falls on May 1.

The weather was chilly and we had a few less teams than last year, but we still had a great time challenging our minds with conservation practices. Nineteen teams participated from five area schools: Detroit Lakes, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Fergus Falls, Pelican Rapids, and Underwood.

All students were tested on five learning stations in the following areas: Wetlands, Wildlife, Forestry, Soils and Current Events. This year’s current event was “Managed Grazing Systems in Minnesota.”

Natural resource professionals from agencies such as US Fish and Wildlife, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Minnesota Board of Water & Soil Resources, and personnel from the Prairie Wetland Center presented at each station and assessed the student’s knowledge of the natural world.

Each team of students consisted of five members which worked together to answer twenty questions presented at each station.

Congratulations to the winners from the 2013 Area I Senior Envirothon:

  • First Place: Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School
  • Second Place: Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School
  • Third Place: Pelican Rapids High School

These top three teams continued to the state competition which was held at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., on May 20. Twenty-eight teams from around the state competed for a chance to represent Minnesota at the North American Envirothon in Bozeman, Mont., in July of this year.

The winning teams from the State Envirothon competition are:

  • First Place: TrekNorth, Bemidji
  • Second Place: Kittson High School
  • Third Place: Hopkins High School
