Arnold "Woody" Johnson, 90, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Woody was born the son of John and Anna (Engberg) Johnson on Oct. 19, 1918 in Holmesville Township, Becker County. He attended country school in Holmesville Township and attended high school in Detroit Lakes. Woody enlisted in the United States Air Force and received an honorable discharge after four years of service.
Woody married Charlene Livingood on July 20, 1944 in
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. They made their home in rural Detroit Lakes, where Woody farmed for a few years. Woody then moved his family into Detroit Lakes and worked for the Post Office as a mail carrier and clerk for 15 years. They subsequently moved to Fergus Falls, where they owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware store for a short time. Woody and Charlene then moved back to Detroit Lakes and became owners of the Castaway Motel and Resort for 20 years.
Woody helped develop the Becker County Recreation Department and was the first to establish the Winter Wonderland Snowmobile Trails in the Detroit Lakes area. He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Club and Trinity Lutheran Church.
Woody and Charlene enjoyed traveling during their retirement years. They visited many places in the United States and also Sweden, Norway and Finland. Woody was known as a master woodworker, and used wood he harvested from his own property to design his masterpieces. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
Surviving Woody are his wife, Charlene Johnson of Detroit Lakes; three sons, Michael (Judy) Johnson of St. Helens, Ore., David (Deb) Johnson of Rochert and Donald (Anne) Johnson of Blaine, Minn.; one daughter, Marcia (Jarl) Olson of Hastings, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law Gail Honsey of Emmons, Minn.; one brother, Richard (Georgette) Johnson of St. Francis, Minn.; two sisters, Ida (Toye) Odegaard of Detroit Lakes and Deloris Odegaard of Chicago, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Johnson of Holland, Mich.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Woody in death were his parents; son, Benny; three brothers, Gene, Jerry and Bill; and three sisters, Ethel Nelson, Edna LaVine and Effie Derringer.
There will be visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, March 20, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Ann Newgard-Larson officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
