At 5:20 a.m. Friday, Beltrami County deputies responded to a call from Red Lake Police that Red Lake officers were in pursuit on State Highway 1 near Redby of a stolen blue Chevrolet Lumina with Red Lake license plates driven by a man suspected of being intoxicated.

Beltrami County deputies located the suspect vehicle traveling south on County Road 23. One deputy followed the Lumina with siren and emergency lights about 20 miles south to the intersection with U.S Highway 71 in Turtle River. The chase reached speeds of 100 mph.

At the intersection, the Lumina turned south on Highway 71, but the deputy encountered traffic and had to drive his squad car into a snow bank to prevent a collision. A second deputy picked up the chase.

The Lumina continued south on Highway 71 crossing lanes until arriving in Bemidji where Bemidji Police officers tried to stop the car with spike strips. The Lumina's two left tires deflated. The driver continued to flee, but finally gave up, rolled down his window and put his hands out.

The driver, a 31-year-old man, and his passenger, a 28-year-old woman, were handcuffed and taken to the Beltrami County Jail. The man registered .25 on an Intoxilyzer test. A crack pipe and an open bottle of vodka were found in the Lumina. Red Lake Police reported the Lumina had been stolen from a Red Lake resident where the two suspects had been partying.
