Painters, quilters, woodcarvers and other vendors will fill City Park on Sunday, July 29 for the 34th annual Arts and Crafts in the Park.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., over 100 artists' booths will be open, selling arts and crafts such as jewelry, woodwork, paintings, photography, pottery, fabric crafts and more.

"It's a little bit of everything," said Carrie Johnston, president of the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, which is sponsoring the event.

There will also be 10 food vendors, with everything from pizza or barbecue, to fresh lemonade.

This year, for the first time, Arts and Crafts in the Park will feature a live art demonstration.

Lake Area Woodcarvers is the group being featured. In past years, some artists have chosen to have art demos at their booths, but this is the first year a group demonstration is being featured at the event.

Arts and Crafts in the Park is the second of two arts events in the region that weekend - Pelican Rapids is having an art fair Saturday, July 28.

Pelican Rapids' Art in the Park will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Sherin and Peterson Parks.

The Pelican Rapids and Detroit Lakes Chambers coordinate these events together, so that non-local vendors can travel to the area and show two times in one weekend, Johnston said.

Most of the vendors are from within a 100-mile radius, Johnston said, but there are always some who travel from much farther away.

Arts and Crafts in the Park is free admission, and will happen rain or shine. In addition to the art-viewing, shopping and food, there's also the park itself to enjoy.

Usually a couple thousand people show up to the event, Johnston said, and the organizers are expecting a good turnout again this year.
