Author Jan Smith to host book signing Saturday in DL
Jan Smith, historical fiction writer and former Cormorant resident, will host a book signing in Detroit Lakes from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at Book World, 815 Washington Avenue.
Jan's first book, Rambling 'Round Maine, Phelps Mill 1890, is the story of 11-year-old Nivek and his family as they come to Phelps Mill from Southern Minnesota.
The family builds a sod house and a log house and participate in community events the year the flour mill begins to operate. Maine in this title is what is known as Phelps Mill today.
In the sequel Remembering the Maine 1898, Nivek and two of his friends, Wing, his Chippewa friend, and Jesse Langdon from Medora, N.D., head for Washington D.C. Each wants to join with Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders who are organizing to be on their way to Cuba to fight in the Spanish American War.
Maine in this title is the ship, the USS Maine, which was blown up in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay harbor and became the focal cause for the war in 1898. Traveling by horse, train, stagecoach and walking provides the young men with a wide variety of experiences as they cross the country and water, finding their place in life.
