Authorities charge Moorhead bus driver in April crash that killed a Pelican Rapids student
Charges have been filed against the driver involved in an April fatal school bus crash near Albertville, Minn.
Assistant Wright County Attorney Brian Lutes said he charged Loren Ernst of Moorhead with two counts of criminal vehicular operation and one count of criminal vehicular homicide for the death of Jessica Weishair, 16.
Several people were injured in the crash involving members of the Pelican Rapids High School band that was returning from a trip to Chicago.
Two buses, carrying band members and chaperones, were traveling along Interstate 94 when the bus carrying Weishair tipped over April 5 near Albertville.
Ernst, who has declined to speak about the crash, told an investigator he possibly "dozed off at the time of the crash," according to the criminal complaint filed in Wright County.
He had only slept for 2 ½ to three hours in the 24 hours prior to the crash, the complaint said.
