Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

GRANITE FALLS -- Unconditional bail was set at $3 million this morning for double homicide suspect Andrew Dikken.

Yellow Medicine County Attorney Keith Helgeson spoke of Dikken's "cold and calculated actions " in the shooting deaths of Kara Monson and Chris Panitzke and said that Dikken was a threat to the victims' families and the public at large.

Dikken, 28, of Granite Falls and formerly of Renville, made his first appearance this morning in Yellow Medicine County District Court in Granite Falls on two charges of second-degree murder. Dikken was the subject of a two-week manhunt after the Sept. 2 shootings at Monson's Granite Falls home and has been held since Tuesday in the Yellow Medicine County Jail.

Helgeson said that authorities have discovered that Dikken had traveled in five states prior to the shooting. Dikken's defense attorney Benjamin Pieh said that Dikken no longer represents a danger and said that while his whereabouts for the 15 days after the shooting are not known, he did not go far.

Dikken showed up at his parents' Renville home Tuesday afternoon and they immediately turned him in to the Renville County Sheriff's Office in Olivia, the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said in a statement Tuesday.

Monson, 26, died in the early morning hours of Sept. 2 of multiple gunshot wounds at her Granite Falls home. Panitzke, 28, of Redwood Falls, died several days later at a Minneapolis hospital from complications of the multiple gunshot wounds he suffered. Panitzke made a 911 call from the scene at Monson's home and identified Dikken as the shooter to officers, saying "Andy" Dikken had entered the house and started shooting at them as they slept, the criminal complaint says.
