Ballard named logo winner
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

Roosevelt Elementary fifth grader Lacey Ballard was named the winner of the Dick Beardsley T-shirt design contest.

Her drawing will appear on the t-shirt for the Beardsley Kids Fun Run, on Saturday, Sept. 6, in Detroit Lakes. Each participant registered before Sept. 1 will receive a shirt, a ribbon and will get the chance to run with legend Dick Beardsley.

The race begins at 11 a.m. at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion. The cost is $5. The Kids Fun Run is just one of the many races that are part of the Dick Beardsley Run festivities. Other events include the 5K run/walk, half marathon and the new 2-person half marathon relay.

The Dick Beardsley Half Marathon was started 13 years ago in honor of former Detroit Lakes resident, two-time Grandma's Marathon champion, Boston Marathon runner-up and the fifth fastest man in U.S. marathon history, Dick Beardsley.

Beardsley and guest legend Patti Catalano Dillon will speak at a spaghetti feed at the Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes on Friday, Sept. 5. Dinner will be served from 4:30-6:30 p.m., followed by the speakers at 7:30 p.m.

The Beardsley race is growing each year. In 2007, more than 1,650 runners competed in the half marathon, 5K and kid's run. Race director Brent Wolf says registrations are up for 2008.

"We're looking forward to a great event this year. With the addition of 2-person relay and the growing popularity of running in the region, we're hoping for big participation numbers. Also, judging by the entries we've received so far, I think there's a good chance we'll see some record times come in as well," Wolf says.

The looped course runs through downtown and around beautiful Detroit Lake. The terrain is relatively flat with gently rolling hills. The race is great for all running levels, from beginning runners to those wanting to tune up for the Twin Cities Marathon.

The course is USATF certified and chip-timed for the most accurate results. Awards are given to the top three in each age category and age-graded winners. Each participant receives a medal and performance fabric long sleeve race T-shirt.

Participants can register online at www.dickbeardsleyrun.com or contact the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center at 218-844-4221 Ext. 118.
