The first-ever state berth for the Detroit Lakes Bantam A’s resulted in a successful fourth-place finish this past weekend in Buffalo.

The Lakers won their quarterfinal matchup against East Grand Forks 3-0 to advance to the semifinals, where they ultimately lost to Edina in a narrow 1-0 defeat Saturday.

In the third-place game Sunday, the Lakers lost another one-goal game to Crow River, as Mahtomedi toppled Edina for the state title 6-0.

Friday in the quarters, three different DL skaters found the back of the net with Jack DeConcini, Jon Richards and Jacob Anderson all scoring.

DL goalie Austin Fritz notched the shutout with 20 saves.

“This was our best defensive game our team played all season,” said DL head coach Ben Noah.

In the semifinal tug-o-war against Edina, the Lakers fell just short by outshooting the metro team, but also ran into one of the hottest goalies of the tournament.

“We left everything out on the ice,” Noah said. “We outshot and outplayed Edina, but we ran into a hot goalie, one of the best I have seen in Bantam A hockey.”

Once again in the third-place game, DL outshot Crow River, but just ran out gas to finish fourth overall in the state.

The Laker Bantam A’s finished the season with an impressive 40-14-2 record.
